Rumination and the Default Mode Network: Why the Mind Replays, Worries, and Gets Stuck

There is a strange kind of thinking that feels useful while it is happening, but leaves you more tired, more emotional, and no closer to a solution.

You replay the same conversation.

You imagine what you should have said.

You analyze why someone acted a certain way.

You revisit an old mistake.

You predict future failure.

You try to solve your life at midnight.

You think:

“If I think about this one more time, maybe I will finally understand it.”

But one more time becomes ten more times.

Ten becomes a whole evening.

But each form has a healthy and unhealthy version.

25. The practical principle: switch networks

Rumination is often internally focused and self-referential.

So one practical goal is to switch from inner simulation to external engagement.

Not forever.

Just long enough to break the loop.

32. Mindfulness: training non-fusion

Mindfulness is often misunderstood as “empty your mind.”

That is not the point.

Repeating this is not helping.
